Building Dreams, Breaking Barriers: Afshanah’s Journey in Construction HO Support Team

At GAEP, we nurture talent and growth, and Afshanah Wazeer’s journey is a perfect example. Read along to find how she transitioned herself from an intern to GET and then to an engineer.

1. Give a brief introduction about yourself

I’m Afshanah Wazeer Wazir Ahmad, a highly ambitious and driven engineer with an unwavering commitment to growth and excellence. I thrive on adaptability, which allows me to excel in diverse environments and tackle challenges with confidence and resilience. My passion for sports, especially cricket, fuels my competitive spirit and teamwork, while my ability to listen and connect with others helps me build meaningful, positive relationships.

2. Can you tell us about your background, including where you're from and what you studied?

I am from Kashmir and completed my Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Civil Engineering from National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu.

3. Why did you choose to study civil engineering?

From the very beginning, I was captivated by civil engineering. The idea of working on construction sites, with the blazers and helmets symbolizing hard work and progress, deeply fascinated me. I was drawn to the creative process of envisioning a building and bringing it to life—transforming concepts into reality. This passion for construction drove me to pursue my dreams without hesitation, undeterred by the comfort of an office job. I’ve always believed in rolling up my sleeves and being hands-on, and I was determined to follow my passion for working on sites, no matter the challenges.

4. When and why did you join GAEP?

I joined GAEP in March 2023 as an intern through the campus placement drive at my college. Later, I was offered a position as a Graduate Engineering Trainee (GET) in June 2023. I chose to join GAEP because I learned that it is a subsidiary of RP Group, a well-established Middle Eastern company with nearly 50 years of expertise in the construction industry. I have always been eager to learn and work on construction sites, and GAEP provided the ideal platform to pursue this passion.

5. What do you like about GAEP?

What I truly admire about the work culture at GAEP is the open-door policy, which fosters direct access to team leads and senior management. This transparency and approachability create an environment of trust and collaboration. I am also impressed by the company’s thoughtful attention to detail, such as providing a prayer room that honours the religious sentiments of its employees, reflecting GAEP’s commitment to inclusivity. On a personal note, I had the opportunity to refer my brother for an internship, and he successfully completed a rewarding 2-months stint here. This speaks volumes about the supportive, family-like culture at GAEP, where growth and opportunities are encouraged for all.

6. How has your tenure been?

My 1.5 years at GAEP have been an incredibly rewarding journey of continuous learning and growth. I’ve gained valuable insights not only within my own domain but also across various other departments, thanks to the freedom and encouragement to explore beyond my role. The support I received from my manager and the entire company allowed me to seamlessly pursue higher education while balancing my professional responsibilities. I am also grateful for the collaborative and nurturing atmosphere created by my colleagues, especially the senior team members, who consistently took the time to guide and mentor me without hesitation. This experience has truly shaped me both professionally and personally, and I’m excited for the future ahead.

7. What is your greatest achievement here so far?

My greatest achievement at GAEP so far has been realizing the true value of further education in advancing my career. This understanding drove me to pursue a Master’s in Structural Engineering from Vel Tech University, a decision that has significantly enhanced my professional capabilities. Additionally, I spearheaded the creation of a comprehensive user manual for the maintenance of scaffolding materials, a resource now implemented across all projects to ensure efficiency and safety. On a personal level, I’ve grown tremendously, learning to live independently and manage all aspects of life on my own. These accomplishments reflect my commitment to both professional and personal development.

8. What are your plans for the future?

I am committed to continuing my journey with RP Group on-site, where I am eager to experience the dynamic work culture of the Middle East and broaden my professional horizons. My goal is to learn beyond my current domain, continuously enhancing my technical competencies to become a subject matter expert and to stay ahead in an ever-evolving industry. I am also determined to climb the corporate ladder, striving to reach the highest levels of leadership within the company. Ultimately, I aim to make a lasting impact, achieving success that will make both myself and my family immensely proud of the path I’ve chosen
